Brinoxa Style Journal — Issue No. 1
I still remember the first time I bought an oversized shirt. I almost didn’t. It was hanging on the rack looking two sizes too big, and my first thought was, “this is going to swallow me whole.” I bought it anyway, mostly out of curiosity, and it’s been in my weekly rotation ever since.
That’s the funny thing about oversized shirts — they look like the easiest piece in your wardrobe to get wrong, and end up being one of the easiest to get right. You just need to know a few tricks. So for the very first post on the Brinoxa journal, I wanted to start with something we get asked about constantly: how do I actually wear this thing?
Here are five ways we love styling ours.
1. Tuck it in — just the front
This is the one styling trick that changes everything. Don’t tuck the whole shirt in, just grab the front hem and tuck it loosely into your waistband. It takes ten seconds and instantly gives the outfit shape, so you get the relaxed look up top without disappearing into fabric.
2. Belt it like a dress
If your shirt is long enough, add a thin belt at the natural waist and wear it as a shirt-dress with leggings or bike shorts underneath. It’s one of our favourite weekend looks — comfortable, but it doesn’t read as “I just rolled out of bed.”
3. Layer it open over a fitted tee or tank
An oversized shirt worn open, like a light jacket, over a simple fitted tank is one of the most underrated combinations. It adds structure to an otherwise plain outfit, and it’s perfect for that in-between weather when you’re not sure if you need a jacket.
4. Roll the sleeves, always
Small detail, big difference. Rolling the sleeves up to just below the elbow instantly makes an oversized shirt look intentional rather than borrowed. It’s the difference between “I’m wearing my brother’s shirt” and “I planned this outfit.”
5. Knot it at the waist
For a cropped, more fitted silhouette, gather the extra fabric at the front and tie it in a simple knot. This is a great option with high-waisted jeans or a skirt, and it works especially well if you want to wear the shirt during the day and then untie it for evening.
An oversized shirt isn’t one outfit — it’s five or six, depending on how you tie, tuck, or layer it. That’s really the whole idea behind Brinoxa: pieces that move with you instead of locking you into one look.
If you picked up our Oversized Shirt and haven’t quite figured out how to wear it yet, start with the front-tuck. It’s the fastest way in.
